MUSIC

SAPPHIRE SLOWS

HIROSHIMA | DJ WITH A MISSION

Even though she produces most of her tracks from her bedroom, Sapphire Slows captured the attention of record labels and producers with her ethereal voice and “ghostly” quality of her music. An inspiration to female DJs all over the world, she uses her global recognition as an artist to prompt more conversations within the music industry to address the misogyny that still exists in the club scene.

KEIZOmachine!

KANAGAWA | FREESTYLE MUSICIAN

After overcoming a few obstacles in life, KEIZOmachine! found a whole new perspective. His passion for music became his source of inspiration. While most electronic DJs use rhythms and beats to make music, this freestylist samples ambient sounds from everyday life to create music that is unconventional, authentic and fresh. Keizo is an inspiration to some, but most certainly, unforgettable to the rest.

LINYING

SINGAPORE - THE SOULFUL MUSICIAN

As a budding singer-songwriter, Linying didn’t know other musicians, producers or engineers who could help her make her first start. So she taught herself the instruments she lacked players for, used software to create arrangements without a backing band, and learned effects to manipulate her voice when she needed backup singers. Her tenacity and ability to adapt paid off when ‘Sticky Leaves’, her first single, broke into Spotify’s Global Viral 50, and promptly took the no. 1 spot.

.gif

SINGAPORE | THE POETIC MUSICIANS

“One must imagine Sisyphus happy” – Albert Camus’s thoughts about being content despite life’s banality is the perfect description for .gif’s music. Besides creating electronic music that combines lush soundscapes with raw, emotive lyrics, these former literature teachers hope that their songs resonate with their listeners – to help their audience feel less alone during dark times. The desire to experiment and evolve naturally led them to take on many collaborations beyond the music scene, such as being Musical Directors to a theatre production, or composing soundtracks to films and even literary readings, pushing them well beyond their own musical boundaries.

ART

YOSHITAKA NISHIGAKI

WAKAYAMA | UNORTHODOX WATERCOLOURIST

Yoshitaka Nishigaki challenges the traditional approach of Nihonga paintings. Through his unique take on watercolour painting, he continues to push the boundaries of the centuries-old Japanese art form. His style is described to be a reinterpretation of Nihonga paintings with a breath of freshness, elevated with his unconventional use of colours.

RYOTA HAGIWARA

SAITAMA | NOMADIC IKEBANA ARTIST

Ryota Hagiwara was first fascinated by the world of flowers and discovered his passion for Ikebana when he was a promoter of the atelier 'STORY'. When he was 30, he packed his belongings and travelled around the world to seek inspiration to evolve his art. He has since started a successful career in flower arrangement and is striving to change the traditional perspective of Ikebana with his global influence.

MESSYMSXI

SINGAPORE | THE POLYMATH ARTIST

Singaporean multi-disciplinary artist, Messymsxi draws inspiration from her surroundings to create masterpieces that shine a spotlight on social and environmental issues. Messymsxi constantly seeks new ways to explore media and forms outside of her comfort zone. Her recent installation — Plastic Ocean — was made from more than 20,000 pieces of discarded plastic to evoke a sense of being submerged in a sea of swirling trash.

AMOS ANANDA YEO

SINGAPORE | THE REBELLIOUS FASHION DESIGNER

After graduating from Singapore, Amos was determined to launch his debut collection despite facing rejections and setbacks. He took AMOS ANANDA to the international stage within 5 years. He has participated in major runway shows and even presented his collection at Paris Fashion Week. Now as a part of the TIGER ROAR Collective, he is always looking for new ways to challenge and blur the lines between streetwear and high fashion as we know it, all while representing Singapore on the world stage.

FOOD

SAKURA AKIMOTO

FUKUI | THE SOCIAL CHEF

Sakura left her job as a Cabin Attendant to pursue her dream of being a chef at 26. She opened her own restaurant, Morceau, which allowed her to continue focusing on maintaining the integrity of traditional cuisines while coming up with new recipes. After recently becoming a mother, Chef Sakura hopes to bring the warmth of home-cooked meals to her professional kitchen.

AARON WONG

SINGAPORE | THE UNCONVENTIONAL CHEF

Despite not having formal culinary training, this underwater-photographer-turned-rebel-chef is not bound by any rules or expectations. Rather, Aaron is motivated by his passion for Singaporean hawker culture, and his desire to take the food he loves further — by experimenting, evolving and reimagining street food, and all its unexpected possibilities. So he may pass on its flavours and its spirit in new and surprising ways.
